Staying Focused On Your Goals

Recently, I was reading an interview with a very famous tightrope walker. You know, those people who walk on a rope between buildings or tall trees or even the grand canyon… Anyways, when asked what the key was when it came to walking on the tightrope, this individual replied:

“The secret is keeping your eyes fixed on where you are going. You never look down. Where your head goes, that’s where your body is going too. If you look down, there’s a good chance you will fall. So you always have to look where you want to be.”

Staying Focused On Your GoalsThis answer is powerful on so many different levels…

First off, far too many times we are looking for immediate gratification and forget where we eventually want to be. We get caught up in failures, set backs, and disappointments instead of pushing on and keeping our eyes on the prize.

In a recent 30-day transformation contest I put on, I saw more action being taken by my clients than ever before. The reason for this was because there was a goal or a prize just 30 days away.

Setting goals and keeping focused on them is huge. This allows you to push past defeats and disappointments. For example, let’s say you miss a workout and are feeling really down on yourself.

You have two options: You can either continue beating yourself up or you can move on and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

If you choose to do the latter, you are keeping your eyes on the end results.

Staying Focused On Your Goals1

Always stay focused on your goals!

Next, I love how this tightrope walker says “you never look down.”

In fitness, this can mean not getting caught up with the number on the scale or getting discouraged about how much you weigh or the lack of muscle you have gained.

I receive emails all the time of people complaining that they have only lost 3 pounds in the last 7 days… Some progress is better than no progress.

Instead of getting caught up with what you think you should have accomplished, focus on what you eventually want to accomplish and keep going after it.

You have to remember that it took years for your body to be where it is today… That said, it takes time for your body to reset and start getting healthy. One week of eating healthy is not going to fix everything.

It is a consistent effort that you must put in day after day…

The tightrope walker in this interview states again “if you look down, there is a good chance you will fall.”

What he is saying is that if you stall or hesitate, you will fail.

You have to keep moving one step at a time and eventually you will reach your destination.

Staying Focused On Your Goals2

Reach for new heights!

The final point I want to make, is about when the tightrope walker says “where your head goes, that is where your body is going too.”

Achieving goals starts in your head.

If you are constantly telling yourself “oh I can never lose weight” or “I am too busy to exercise”, you will never reach the goals you want.

You first must start changing the conversation in your head before your body follows.

If you tell yourself over and over that you can do something, you start believing it and will find it so much easier to accomplish what you want.

Your body follows where your head is going…

Will there be stumbles along the way? Sure.

Yet, by having a positive attitude and the right conversation going on in your mind, you will be able to get right back up and keep pushing forward.

My question to you, is ‘are you keeping your eyes on the prize or are you constantly looking down and allowing excuses, faults, disappointments to hold you back?’

Today, I challenge you to write out your goals for the next 30 days and not worry about anything but reaching those. If your goal is to lose 10 pounds, don’t worry if you have only lost 2 after the first 7 days. Keep going.

If you want to workout 20 times in the next 30 days and you only worked out twice the first week… Don’t give up. Get back on it and amp up the workouts the final 23 days.

Stay focused on the prize, the end result… And take steps each and everyday to help you move closer to those goals.

Remember…

“The secret is keeping your eyes fixed on where you are going. You never look down. Where your head goes, that’s where your body is going too. If you look down, there’s a good chance you will fall. So you always have to look where you want to be.”
